First glass coat done. Very stressy, very scary because the wetting out of glass, adhesive and wood is a one-shot deal and the final look of the boat depend on how well I do this step and this IS #myfirstrodeo. Thanks to @northumb_handbuilt_watercraft for advice, @nickofferman for instruction and @bearmountainboats for the solis foundation. The boat has been named: Natty Bumppo! Regardless of whether or not anyone gets the context I love the ridiculous sound of it. If you’re interested, Natty Bumppo, the protagonist of James Fenimore Coopers Leather Stocking Tales (1823), is a mythic frontiersman and guide. A white man raised by Delaware Indians, he is associated with the vanishing wilderness as an idealized figure, hauntingly loyal to a doomed way of life. My favorite description: “Natty combines "the soul of a poet with the nature of a redneck." I also found a steam boat that ran on Ostego lake in MI around 1860 with the same name. TIL about Courting Canoes. Popular in the early 1900s these boats allowed young people some privacy that couldn’t be had on a regular chaperoned date. The boats had longer covered decks and seating arranged so the person in front faced the stern, and the paddler could flex while searching for a private cove. The boats would be outfitted with parasols, a victrola, pillows and even a bar under the extended decking. #courting #vintagecanoe #courtingcanoe #americanbeer

I used teak to make the yoke. It was weirdly exciting to see it take shape and have the grain appear with finer and finer sanding. The color will quickly darken to deep chestnut with time. #woodencanoes #stripbuiltcanoe
